We have received various reports regarding door-to-door callers asking for email addresses and bank details in order to set up direct debit payments for various charities. While some of these may be legitimate, there have been complaints that heavy handed and aggressive techniques have been used. On one occasion an attempt was made to gain entry under the excuse of needing something to rest on whilst taking details. Most legitimate callers will have their own equipment and identification, however please remember not to divulge any personal details to strangers, however convincing they may be. Please pass this informaiton onto friends and neighbours.Thank you.

If you have any information regarding the contents of this message, please call either Dorset Police on 101,  Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or you may prefer to contact your local SNT.

We are experiencing an increase of suspicious activity in relation to Rogue Traders and Bogus callers.

A rise in scrap metal prices has meant an increase in scrap metal thefts and large vehicles loaded with scrap metal have been seen in the Colehill area and have called at addresses offering their services to remove any you may have.

Please do not engage people who call at your door for work. Do not allow them access to your property. A list of approved traders is available through your local Home Watch (see 'Home Watch' page) or Trading Standards Office.

If you receive any suspicious callers to your door please contact Dorset police immediately on 101.

Just before yesterday lunchtime a resident in the Wesley Rd area of Colehill had a suspicious male knock on the door and offer to relay his driveway.

The man was in a grey Ford Transit van with a registration ending UNM and was carrying a clipboard with 'Check a Trade' written on it. Our informants own enquiries with 'Check a Trade' revealed they had not heard of the company.

The man made no attempt to enter the property and left when the offer of work was declined.

Please keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours who may not be as able to deflect unwanted trades people as our informant and report suspicious activity to the police.

Thanks,
Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

Sometime last week a silver car derived van was stolen from the driveway of a house in Lonnen Rd, Colehill.

A couple of weeks ago we had a report of damage being caused to a front room window in Dales Drive. Following investigation by Colehill Safer Neighbourhood Team the young man responsible was identified. A restorative justice conference was held with the offender, his mother and the two elderly victims. As a result not only was an apology forthcoming but the victims were suitably recompensed financially.

I have had two reports of suspicious men in the Sandy Lane/Lonnen Road area.
An elderly female resident in Sandy Lane challenged a young man on her property around lunchtime. He then stated he was from the council checking the drains. This was untrue. He was seen driving away in a blue Citroen Xantia.
Shortly after 4pm a resident of Lonnen Rd noticed a young man walking around the outside of her property. He did not knock on the door or deliver anything before walking away.
Please keep an eye out for vulnerable neighbours and report any suspicious activity to the police.
Thank you, Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

23 Oct 10  From Colehil SNT -

I just wanted to send out a message to say how nice it was to see everyone at Thursday's AGM. For those who could not make it Matt and I wanted to pass on our thanks for your continued support. Particularly the part funding of our new bicycles.

One other really important message was passed on Thursday by your Chairman, John Shave - the Wimborne & Colehill Home Watch needs help in the form of new committee members and new contacts. Without an increase in support for the current committee there is a very real danger that this excellent Home Watch will fold. Please do not be complacent about the impact this will have on our ongoing fight to reduce crime and keep people safe. We have to work together as a community and Home Watch is a massively effectively tool for doing this.

Yours hopefully, Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

Some of you may have heard the Police helicopter last night over the Colehill area. This was in response to a call from a member of the public regarding the possible theft of a caravan. Fortunately Police units arrived and with the help of the helicopter two males were subsequently detained and arrested. Thanks to the quick thinking of a local resident we were able to ensure that a theft did not take place.

12 Oct 11  POLICE OFFER REASSURANCE AFTER SUSPICIOUS INCIDENTS

Police in East Dorset are offering reassurance to parents following a small number of reported suspicious incidents in Alderholt and Hampshire and subsequent online rumours.

During the evening of 7 October, a 12-year-old boy was pushing his bicycle through Alderholt when he was approached by a man driving a white van. The man asked the boy if he wanted a lift home and the boy ran to his house. This man did not make any attempt to force the boy into the van and officers believe that this incident may be a genuine misunderstanding.
Inspector Mike Darkin, of East Dorset, said: “Dorset Police takes all such reports extremely seriously and it is entirely appropriate that we alert our communities when such reports are received.
“However, it is equally important that we let you know that, following further enquiries, these reports are not as they first appeared.
Unfortunately, it seems that a number of malicious rumours have been circulated on the internet and that these unverified reports have caused unwarranted, but understandable, alarm among parents.
I would urge residents not to pass on unsubstantiated rumours and information that they do not know to be true as this frightens people unnecessarily. I would also like to reassure Dorset residents that genuine incidents such as this are exceptionally rare in East Dorset and rarer still when straightforward safety advice is followed.
Our advice to parents and school children has not changed. At any time, and anywhere in the country, it is always wise that children walk in groups, avoid taking unfamiliar routes or shortcuts and are encouraged to let parents know their whereabouts at all times.
Dorset is a safe place and, while we would always encourage members of the public to take a common sense approach to their personal safety, there should be no reason for additional alarm.”

Anyone with concerns should contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Theft from vehicle warning, relating to an increase in thefts of catalytic converters, number plates and other valuables from unattended vehicles across the county.

Police in Dorset are warning motorists not to leave any valuable possessions in their vehicles and to check the fixing of parts and accessories following an increase in thefts from vehicles across the county.

Valuable possessions such as handbags and satellite navigation systems as well as parts and accessories such as catalytic converters and number plates are being targeted from unattended vehicles across the county.

To lower your chances of becoming a victim of these crimes remember the following security advice:
·     Remember lock the doors, windows, boot and sun-roof every time you leave your vehicle
·     Remove all valuables such as handbags, wallets, mobile phones, tools and laptops or other possessions from your vehicle.
·     Remove satellite navigation equipment and GPS from your vehicle, including the cradle, it is a favourite among thieves.
·     To stop number plates from being stolen, fit theft-resistant number plates to your car ensuring that they conform to DVLA standard or replace existing screws with ones that can not be unscrewed (these are called clutch screws).
·     Consider using a steering wheel or handbrake lock and fit locking wheel nuts as wheels can also be a target for car thieves.
·     Fit an alarm or immobiliser to your vehicle.
·     If you have one, use a garage.
·     If you park your car on a driveway, ensure that you have good security lighting as this will make your car visible to the street and can deter would-be-thieves.

Messages from Stour Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team.

16th May, 3 cars were broken into and items taken, all at Eye Bridge car park. Over the last few weeks there has been an increase in vehicle crime around the area, especially in beauty spot car parks. Although there has been an arrest for one of the offences, please be mindful of leaving your valuables on display in your vehicle.
14th -16th May a Ford Transit panel van, registration similar to HV - - FSD, has been acting suspiciously in the area of Pamphill, Shapwick and Holt. This vehicle is linked to scrap metal thefts in particular. Any sightings or information regarding this vehicle please contact Dorset police.

This is a non-domestic burglary message.
Between 7th - 8th May a burglary occurred at Cranborne Road, Furzehill. Entry was gained by smashing the door of the premises. Having gained entry to two areas the offenders stole toiletries, food and drink, cash and a camera. For further advice please contact the Crime Reduction Officer for your area. Thank You.

This is a cold caller message. On 27th April three males called at an address on Freemans Lane, Wimborne. They told the elderly occupant that work needed to be down on the roof of her property. They agreed to carry out the work and went onto the roof as well as gaining access to the inside of her house. Fortunately a neighbour challenged the males and they subsequently left in a silver estate type car. This incident is being investigated. Please do not engage people who call at your door in work. Do not allow them access to your property. If you receive any suspicious callers to your door please contact Dorset police immediately.Thank You.

You may recall that I reported the theft of some alcohol from the Co-Op in February. Following a second similar offence at the One Stop a man has been arrested and charged with both offences.
Last weekend there were two burglaries in Colehill. One in the Bridle Way area whereby entry was gained through an insecure window and cash was stolen. The second was in the area of Smugglers La and a prompt call to the police by neighbours prevented the completion of the offence and no entry was gained. The offender was arrested nearby.
These crimes highlight two important messages - make sure your house is secure before you leave and a call to the police at an early stage can have a positive result.

Several weeks ago two residents in the Ashmeads area suffered some unfortunate damage to their front door. A stone was thrown and broke the outer pane of the double glazing.
I am pleased to report that Colehill SNT have identified the young man responsible and he has apologised to the victims and repaid them for the damage caused.
This was accomplished through a restorative justice conference, facilitated by PCSO Matt Johnson. This is where the victim and the offender, and in this case his father, get together and talk about the incident. The injured party can explain how the crime affected them and the impact the incident had. I feel this is a very powerful way of dealing with incidents like this, particularly where young people are involved.

This is a cautionary warning from the Ferndown Safer Neighbourhood Team, which may be applicable to parts of our area also.
A flyer for driveways work has been handed to police in circumstances of concern. The company are called Forest Drives and the legitimacy of this company cannot be confirmed, however I would draw your attention to the head office address, 115 Victoria Rd, Ferndown - this is in fact, Barclays Bank!  The postcode relates to an entirely different address in Ferndown. Both telephone numbers are messaging services.
Advertising using false information in this way is a criminal offence and, by association, brings into question the credentials of the company.

If anyone has received one of these flyers please bear this in mind before making any arrangements and treat flyers like this with extreme caution.
To view the flyer, then please visit www.ferndownpact.com and click on Crime Reduction Advice section.

If you have any relevant information or you are concerned about this issue, please contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team

Here's a round up of crimes from the last few weeks.
Overnight 6th to 7th March there were two cars broken into in the Bridle Way area. Both cars had valuables left in them. One was parked on a driveway and one might have been left unlocked.
Late in the afternoon of 11th March a telephone kiosk in Dales Dr was attacked and the money stolen from the cash box. You may be surprised to hear that this is a big problem nationally for BT. On this occasion the phone box was spray painted, no doubt to hide the offenders actions. Please call if you see suspicious activity in any of the few remaining local phone boxes.
There has been some graffiti spray painted on the play equipment at Oliver's Park. We are particularly focusing on anti-social behaviour in this area and would be keen to hear any reports of this type of incident.
As the weather is improving I feel it is timely to remind everyone of some common sense summer crime prevention measures:
Do not leave your house insecure while out doing the gardening or other outdoor work.
Do not leave windows open in the warm weather when you are not at home.
Make sure windows are fully closed and car doors locked when they are left unattended.
Please keep an eye out for vulnerable or elderly neighbours who may be targeted by unscrupulous tradesmen. As the weather gets better we see rogue traders offering to do gardening and building work for extortionate fees.

Thank you, Steve Brett, Colehill SNT.

This is a Public information message regarding Census Day, 27th March. All questionnaires should be completed and returned as soon as possible after this date.

9 March 11

This is a cold caller message. On 8th March a male called at an address in Mannington Way, West Moors, stating he was from the water board and wanting to check the elderly occupant's drinking water supply. The occupant refused entry as the male had no identification. The male is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, grey hair, stocky build, wearing a black shirt with something on the left hand side of the shirt. No vehicle was seen. This was the correct course of action to take by the occupant. Please be mindful of cold callers and refuse entry to your home. If you see or hear anything suspicious please contact Dorset Police or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Thank you.

21 Feb 11

At the beginning of February a lady had her Vehicle Excise Licence (Tax Disc) stolen from her car while it was left temporarily insecure in an off road parking area adjacent to Middlehill Rd.
Overnight 11th February a Colehill hairdresser's salon was broken into by forcing the back door and a small amount of cash was stolen.
Saturday lunchtime someone stole a box of wine from the Co-Op but some significant leads are being followed up and it would seem an arrest is imminent.
Thanks, Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

19 Feb 11

During the evening of 15th February in the area of St Catherines Hill, an insecure garden shed was entered and property removed. The security light at the property illuminated and the unknown offender made off. No items were stolen.

During the past week there has been the theft of an insecure Mountain Bike and damage to the wing mirror of a car in the area of Crown Mead. Please secure all property when leaving them even for a short time.

Last Sunday there was a robbery at the One Stop in Dales Drive. I'm pleased to say an arrest has already been made in connection with this serious offence and enquiries are ongoing.

It has been brought to my attention by the Parish Council that there has been a suspiciously large amount of grit disappearing from the Colehill grit bins. This is a resource provided at public expense to keep roads and pavements clear. Not for personal use on private property. If you see people loading up cars and or trailers from the grit bins please inform the police. Any vehicle registration or description of people involved is always useful.

I have been contacted a few times recently regarding various scams, mainly perpetrated by telephone.
Home computer support you do not require. Someone phones claiming to be from your computer support provider. They tell you you have a problem and ask you to carry out some actions on the computer to help you resolve it. However what they are doing is getting you to allow them remote control over your pc. Once this is done they can access your personal information.
A well known national utility provider is offering free solar panels. A closer inspection of the small print reveals they keep the electricity produced and charge you if you want to use any of it.
A provider of home security cold calls offering very cheap installation of a house alarm but the monitoring and service cost is astronomical.

There has been an increase in the number of burglaries in the Wimborne area. This includes both private and commercial properties. Unfortunately some private sheds have been left unlocked by owners and provided an easy target for thieves. Commercial premises have also been targeted with entry being forced through rear doors and tools stolen. Please ensure that you review your current security arrangements on your sheds and outbuildings.

These type of calls can be reduced by registering with the Telephone Preference Service www.tpsonline.org.uk
A similar method can be used for junk mail with the Mailing Preference Service www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/
There is a lot of good advice about this sort of thing on www.consumerdirect.gov.uk

Anita Rigler has left the Police service, for pastures new. We wish her well. She says: "I have to say that is has not only been a pleasure working with you all but an absolute privilage. I like to think our joint, considerable effort over the past 14 years has made a substantial difference to the lives of our members and for some parts of Dorset being the safest place in the country." We would like to thank her for her tireless support of all things 'Home Watch'. Ed.

I am seeing reports of males calling door to door begging for money. The report today suggested he was Polish. I have a translation by a Verwood NHW member:
