Please be aware of a current trend in identity theft tactics employed by a group of African or West Indian males targeting properties with post boxes remote from the front door. These persons usually working in pairs are applying for credit cards using the address of properties with security gates and external post boxes. Once they have made the application they then attempt to steal the incoming mail delivered to the target address from the letter box shortly after the post is delivered. Three attempts have been reported on Golf Links Road and Dudsbury Avenue all using the above method of attack. We are aware that this method has already been successful and large bills on credit cards have been run up in the London area.
If you see anyone suspicious trying to access a neighbours mail please call police immediately. You can get good identity advice from the following web site www.cifas.org.uk
f you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Thank you.

Twice recently we have had theft of scrap items from a unit on the Canford Bottom Industrial Estate. The items were left out in the yard but had a value of several hundred pounds. If you see people or vehicles entering or leaving this estate in the middle of the night please call the non-emergency number 222222.
You may recall I told you about the theft of a car headlight in November last year. We have had another very similar theft near Beaucroft School in Wimborne Rd. A car had the rear indicators carefully removed, this time during daylight hours!
Finally if you have any members who have untaxed vehicles on their driveways they might like to know that a resident in Marshfield had their car stolen recently. The vehicle was not advertised for sale, three men with a lorry made a casual enquiry about purchasing the car and a price was agreed. While the owner was inside they hitched the car to their lorry and drove off.

If you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Thanks, Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

We have had several reports of milk stolen from doorsteps following delivery early hours of 13 January.
Grove Road
St John's Close (2 reports)
Crescent Road
Leigh Road
Avenue Road (2 reports)
Cuthbury Close
There may well be many more unreported incidents yet to come in.
I cannot think what to recommend for this type of crime other than to have the milk delivered to a different part of the address but out of sight?

If you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 01202/01305 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Thank you

For info only:
Emergency services are likely to be extremely busy of the next few days, and during any adverse or extreme weather situations. Please remind people not to dial 999 to report non-essential issues. People are also being advised to only visit local A&E departments in an emergency. Or you can call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 for health advice and information.
Bear in mind that emergency vehicles may take additional time to get to you. Allow for this wherever possible by ensuring that you have a short-term contingency plan in case of severe delay.
Only travel when absolutely necessary. If you have to travel, take sensible footwear rather than high heels for example, warm clothing, blankets, a shovel, food and water. Ensure you carry details of any recovery agency with you. Also ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy for the conditions - tyres, windscreen washers and wipers, lights, petrol, heater.
People should drive with extreme caution, even if the roads appear gritted and moderate their driving to the road conditions - keep their speed down, avoid harsh acceleration or braking and keep a much greater distance between them and the vehicle in front as stopping distances increase.
Clear any snow from roofs and windows prior to your journey. It can slip and obscure vision as it defrosts.
Monitor the traffic and weather conditions and plan journeys by using the Highways Agency website, listening to DAB digital 'Traffic Radio' or local radio stations, or by calling the Highways Agency information line (08457 50 40 30).
Health: Everyone is urged to make sure that they wrap up warm, stay indoors unless it is absolutely necessary to go outside, and have plenty of hot drinks throughout the day, especially the elderly.
Do not go out unless absolutely necessary. You are more likely to fall or slip in the icy conditions.
If you have elderly or other vulnerable neighbours, please check up on them and make sure that they are keeping warm and are able to have hot drinks and hot meals to ensure that they are kept safe during the severe weather period.

In addition to the above information and advice, should people have no choice but to abandon their vehicles due to the conditions, police are advising they are left as close to the verge as is safe to do so or risk having them removed to allow access for emergency vehicles and gritters.

21 Dec 09

Everyone is busy and distracted but this is just what the criminal is looking for. When you are out shopping take extra care to protect your bags and valuables.
Do not leave presents in your unattended cars. Always secure your house, even if you are just popping next door. If you are visiting relatives and staying away overnight make sure your house is properly secured.

Happy New Year.

Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

14 Dec 09

You all need to be aware that jobbers charged an elderly person £3100 for cleaning a driveway and house roof in Glendale Close Wimborne on 13 Dec. Fortunately the largest part of the bill was paid by cheque and this is now being cancelled.
The males were driving a blue Transit Van HD07 FHZ which comes back to a keeper who does not live in Dorset. However information received suggests this vehicle is being used by a Dorset resident and as such we can expect more calls of this nature.
Please bear in mind for your elderly members and give them the confidence to call the police if they are at all unsure of any caller to their home. Please ask them all to turn away uninvited callers.
The incident number is 492 dated 13 Dec. If you do see this vehicle outside anyone's home please do call it in on 222222.

2 Dec 09

During the morning of 30th November a theft occurred at one of Colehill's community facilities. An unattended hand bag had fifty pounds removed while the owner was engaged in activities in another room. Please be mindful of where your property is at all times and never leave items of value in insecure locations that are open to the public.
Many of you may have seen the story in the local press of the little girl whose birthday money was stolen from her cards in the post. I feel it is timely, as we approach the Christmas period, to remind people not to put cash in the post.

If you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Regards, Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

23 Nov 09

You have not heard much from us this month, which is a reflection of the very low number of crimes so far in November.
In the last week there have been two burglaries to insecure houses. Both times entry was gained by an insecure rear door. If you go out, even for a very short time, please ensure all doors and windows are locked.
Earlier in the month a vehicle left in a residents parking area off Middlehill Rd had a front head lamp assembly stolen. The item was carefully removed so it would seem the offender was shopping for spares.
It seems a while ago now but I can report that the Halloween weekend passed with few reports of disorder or criminality. The period around 5th November was also relatively quiet with no reports of people using fireworks inappropriately.

I have attached a useful document provided to us by The Illegal Money Lending Team for members information download.

19 Nov 09 - Bogus Child Abduction Abduction Rumours

You may be aware of a story which is doing the rounds regarding an attempted child abduction at an ASDA store

We have spoken to Asda Press Office who have confirmed the incident is a HOAX.

For your information below is what Asda has issued on their website:

====================================================

Don't be taken in by this urban myth about a child abduction

A completely false rumour about a child being abducted in an Asda supermarket has been spreading like wildfire on the internet and by text message in the past couple of days.

It's a hoax story that appears regularly in a variety of guises. The story is usually that a little girl is abducted from her family while they are shopping, then taken to the toilets, where her head is shaved so she can be smuggled out as a boy. This urban myth has circulated for more than 10 years and sometimes rears its head. It's as untrue today as it's ever been.

Here's the latest version some people have received as a text message or email:

"Dear All. This is a very serious message that I hope you can pass on to as many people as you can. Last night at the big Asda in Manchester a 3 year old girl went missing. Fortunately their policy when something like this happens is to lock the doors. The little girl was found in the toilets with 2 Romanian women. One shaving her head and the other dressing her in boys clothes. This come from an employee who was there last night. Please pass the message round to as many as you can and remain extra vigilant with your own children."

So if you receive the message don't worry about it - have a Google around and you'll see plenty of examples of the same story in many different guises and different places.

Digital TV Switchover Help Scheme
The Scheme is run by the BBC in conjunction with the Government. It provides practical support whereby eligible people can have digital television installed to one TV in their home, along with a back up support service.

The scheme helps eligible groups who may face greater barriers in switching to digital TV. It includes easy to use equipment to meet the client's needs, help with installing equipment, fitting a new dish or aerial where possible, as well as a demonstration and someone to call for help while people are getting used to the new equipment.

How can we work together?

Please take a moment to think of people you come into contact with and consider some of the difficulties they may face in preparing for these changes.

The scheme has been specifically set up to give practical support to people facing physical or mental impairments. The eligibility criteria are: -
. Are registered blind or partially sighted or
. Have lived in a care home for six months or more, or
. Get (or could get) certain disability benefits, or
. Are aged 75 or over.

Reports from Foxcroft Drive area of a utility company cold calling, trying to get you to change over your utility company to them.
Often you do not know you have changed suppliers. They may ask to see copies of your bill and then you may find you have changed over without consent.
As with all door step callers have nothing to do with them for your own consumer protection. We have several complaints about this company from Ferndown and Ashley Heath but unfortunately I cannot name them.
Also be aware of the burglar alarm/home security company which we regularly warn members about are back canvassing throughout East Dorset. They have featured on BBC Rogue Traders and Watch Dog more times than I can remember of the past few years.
Ferndown was saturated with calls last week. They are offering 'free shredders' as a way of getting in the door.
Please remind your more vulnerable members never to deal with cold callers for their own consumer protection and remember there should always be a 7-day cooling off period. However some of the more disreputable companies install their alarms the same or the following day before you can change your mind but the cooling off period is still valid. The monitoring charge for these alarms is usually exceptionally high and you are tied into a very long contract.
Thank you for passing this message on. You may save your neighbours thousands of pounds. Literally!
May I just mention that it is well worth registering your telephone number with the Telephone Preference Service to stop these cold callers from contacting you. Email users register online at www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps, it is very easy. Telephone users can call 0845 070 0707. It takes 28 days to be effective but it is then an offence for anyone to ring with an unsolicited call. Unfortunately they cannot stop calls from abroad.

If you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Thank you, Anita

I would like to say how nice it was to see so many people at last night's AGM. I would also like to repeat what I said last night for the benefit of those who could not make it. I am happy to receive constructive feedback regarding our Ringmaster messages as I believe this will help us improve the service we provide.
This weekend is Halloween and the end of the half term holiday and as such there are extra staff on duty to cope with the anticipated rise in anti-social behaviour calls. I would like to encourage you and your groups to contact us at an early stage if you see groups of young people roaming the streets. To that end the Colehill SNT mobile phone number is 07825 521793.
Thanks, Steve Brett, Colehill SNT

26 Oct 09 - Colehill

So far this month we have had four thefts across the Colehill area.
Overnight on Weds 7th Oct a padlock & chain was removed from a field gate in Long La. Although it appears this was to facilitate some fly tipping rather that to steal the items.
On the afternoon of the Tues 13th Oct a public spirited resident had his warning triangle stolen from Olivers Rd where he had left it to warn motorists of a fallen tree.
Sometime between Fri 2nd & Weds 14th Oct a resident in Glynville Cl had two cat scarers stolen from her garden.
Overnight Weds 21st Oct an outboard engine was stolen from a boat in Bridle Way.
This weekend is Halloween both Matt and I will be performing high visiblity foot patrols in the Colehill area.

Last Thursday, 15 October, at about 4pm a lady living in the Wesley Road area of Colehill had a suspicious female visitor.
The woman is desthcribed as white, late 40's to early 50's, 5' 4" to 5' 6" tall. She had blonde hair, which she wore up and is described as buxom. She was wearing a bright pink sweatshirt, blue jeans and grey shoes.
She spoke with a local accent and said she was calling at the address in relation to a dishwasher for sale. The householder was sure she recognised the woman as having called about a month previously with a similarly spurious enquiry about a television.
On this occasion the resident did exactly the right thing and did not let the person in. If you have any caller who is not expected make sure you check their identity and if you are not completely happy do not let them enter your house. Always use a security chain or similar device until you are happy.

If you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Unfortunately over the last couple of weeks we have seen a number of reports of criminal damage to peoples property across the Colehill area. Vandalism to fences or damage to vehicles left parked on the road. This is happening overnight and not just at weekends.
If anyone sees the sort of drunken anti-social behaviour that leads to this sort of damage I would be grateful if they contacted the police at the time. It is far better for us to try and prevent this sort of thing happening than investigate subsequently. If you do discover damage to your property please do report it. An accurate record of what crime is happening helps me to get resources into the Colehill area to deal with these problems.
Offenders were disturbed trying to break into a shop in Middlehill Rd in the early hours of Weds 30th Sept and fled empty handed.
A quantity of scrap metal was stolen from land used by a builder in the Long Lane area on the same night.
The incidents are not thought to be connected.
Please ensure anything of value is secured or locked away inside when unattended.
f you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

We have a report from one of our more active members that a male has today telephoned him with an American accent congratulating him on being selected (not sure what for) and then proceeded to say he would knock down informant's interest rate. He then asked the member to press 6 on the phone. When informant asked caller for his details the phone was put down.
I assume 1471 showed no caller number. This would normally be the case.
This would suggest one of those automatic random dialers and by pressing 6 you would probably confirm your telephone number and that the number was live for a follow up call.
However the member was concerned enough that he asked for you all to be made aware.
Consumer Direct is the organisation to direct your calls to if you need more advice 08454 04 05 06 but our incident number for reference is 205 dated 24 Sept.

I also have a report of a Transit van stolen from Furzehill area near to the crossroads reported 22 Sept. I don't think the vehicle was roadworthy and the theft could have occurred anytime from 4 August.

23 Sept 09

Yellow Pages/Telephone Directories deliveries will commence on the 30th October 2009.

The companies instruct the delivery agents not to leave directories in view of the street, but that it is sometimes unavoidable.
To minimise the risk of burglaries being caused as a result of directories which may be left outside of properties for a prolonged period, please ask members to take them in for neighbours who are away or on holiday.

5 Sept 09

Further to yesterday's message about bogus police officers in Middlehill Rd.
This incident occurred at about 8pm on Weds 2nd Sept. The victim discovered a man and a woman in his house rifling through his kitchen drawers. When challenged they stated they were police officers but they had no ID to confirm this. He managed to get them to leave and nothing was stolen. It transpired they had forced a rear door to gain entry.
The male is described as - white, six foot, well built, in his forties, short mousey brown hair that is greying. Wearing a short dark coloured rain coat, dark trousers and shoes.
The female is described as - white, five eight tall, in her forties, mousey coloured shoulder length hair. Wearing dark coloured bomber jacket and dark trousers.
Both are described as having South London accents.
It should be stressed that this is an unusual occurrence and basic home security as recommended by Police & Neighbourhood Watch coupled with robust checking of people at the door will usually deter this kind of offender.

If you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

1. Two people called at an address in Middlehill Rd purporting to be police officers. They were not in uniform and the elderly resident turned them away when they could not produce identification.
This information has just come through to us and we are seeking to gain more information about this incident. When I have more detail I will send another message.
The resident in this situation did exactly the right thing and I cannot stress enough the importance of requesting to see identification of people calling at your house.

2. Over the weekend 22nd - 23rd August a vehicle parked on the road in Colehill La was scratched and dented on the rear offside wing.
Between 11am and 2pm on Tues 1st Sept a handbag was stolen from an unattended car. The vehicle was left secure in a car park adjacent to the Cranborne Rd near Furzehill. The rear windscreen was smashed and the handbag taken without entering the car.

3 Sept 09 - Horse Watch

A stable in the Corfe Mullen area was entered overnight and the hair on a horses tail was hacked off. Although this was cosmetically unsightly the horse was otherwise unharmed, no other horses were touched.
There does appear to be an increase in horse related crime please ensure all property is secure and marked.

1. A member has reported the following which you may wish to be aware of:

"On 31st I received a telephone call from an international number. When answered it is a recorded voice saying that they can reduce interest on Delta & Visa cards and to press button 6. I did not do this but rang my bank & was informed that they are aware of this & that it is "Phishers" trying to get the number of your bank account. Thought I had better let you know about this."

2. Thank you to the many contacts and members who have voted for John's bid for funds from the Criminal Justice System.

Many of you have found the text on the web site link to be corrupted and may have been unsure what you were voting for.
John Shave has provided the correct text below which I hope will be useful for you to copy and paste so that you can forward onto your neighbours.

Offer 2: 100 Wireless Burglar Alarms at a £100 subsidy on the purchase price of £350. Total request £10,000. Grand total £15,000

27 August 09

Two members have today at 1200 noon reported a suspicious white Transit registration FJ53 CJU calling on residents in Culverhayes and Parmiter Road area touting for gardening work.
The vehicle was stopped checked in Lewens Lane Wimborne about 1245 hrs. There are no offences at this time. However I urge vigilance and if this vehicle is seen outside an elderly person's home please call it in via the 222222 number, quoting incident number 221 dated 27 Aug.
Once again we only need calls if working at a vulnerable persons address, not just general sightings.

May I remind all members that the steam fair is approaching and that there will be a much higher number of cold callers over the next few weeks whilst the travellers are down for the steam fair.
This is a good opportunity to remind your more vulnerable members about the dangers of dealing with cold callers for their own consumer protection.

24 August 09 - Various Driver Courses for young & old !

Young drivers can brush up on road safety tips for summer - A free practical driving refresher course is available to young people.

Driver error is a factor in the vast majority of collisions. And the county council's road collision statistics reveal that, in the last 3 years, almost one in every three car drivers killed or seriously injured were aged 17-24.
The county council is now inviting young drivers aged 17-24 to sign up for the 90-min driving sessions. As part of a pilot scheme, a limited number of sessions - which usually cost £37.50 - are being offered free of charge.
The offer is open to any driver aged between 17 and 24 who holds a full driving licence (i.e., they've passed the DSA car driving test) - get more information and register for the scheme by calling the road safety team on 01305 224267 or by emailing roadsafety@dorsetcc.gov.uk
All sessions are taken with an experienced driving instructor and can include both town and country driving. They focus on areas including hazard perception and awareness, maintaining a safe travelling distance from the vehicle in front and managing speed.
The driver provides the car, which must be roadworthy, taxed and MOT'd and the driver must be insured to drive it. The instructor will ask to see the driver's licence and proof of insurance before the drive takes place.
Drivers can also get information about advanced driving courses, Pass Plus, and a handy guide to buying your first car, 'On The Road', which is produced by the county council's trading standards team.

Whether or not connected, some distraction burglaries were reported in North Dorset several weeks ago.

The male may be in company with a female, no description, and no vehicle details are available.
It would be very helpful if you could warn your more vulnerable members and encourage them to dial 999 if they suspect anyone suspicious calling at their home.
The incident number for reference is 234 dated 8 June.

**For info only**
A burglar alarm company is currently canvassing for business throughout Dorset. This company has been the subject of previous circulations but reports this time state the company are offering to fit a free smoke alarm as a means of gaining your interest. The alarms frequently offered by these type of companies include a nominal charge for the installation but the monitoring fee is extremely expensive. As with all casual callers we recommend you do not deal with them for your own consumer protection. If you do need more advice please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

25th March 09

Dorset Police are looking for a male who is committing deception offences throughout Dorset. The report yesterday was from Weymouth. Wiltshire police also have an interest in this male. He is travelling so this message is relevant to you all.
We believe the method he uses is to find a parish or church notice board and to get names and/or addresses of people attached to the church, he then uses this info to call on those persons suggesting he has been sent by the vicar. He uses the vicars name stating he/she has sent him along. He then convinces the victim to lend him sums of cash stating he will pay it back. He is very plausible and easily wins the victims confidence. He has in the past been known to approach persons in the post office using this tactic. It is possible that he is driving in a Silver Ford Focus part registration: NG06***.
The male is described as 6ft tall, 23 years old, slim build with dark hair possibly curly, crooked teeth with Scottish accent. At one of the incidents he claims his name is Liam.
Any information at all would be appreciated please via 222222. Message number 358 dated 24 March.

Anita Rigler, ex Eastern Watch Co-ordinator has moved to her new role at Verwood Police Station 222817 as County Wide support to local Safer Neighbourhood teams. Your point of contact is now your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Important information about a telephone scam designed to get you to disclose bank card details.

Unknown persons are calling on the telephone, they claim to be from the Tax Office and are advising that the recipient of the call is due a tax rebate; personal information is requested, this includes name, address and date of birth along with a credit/debit card number and the 3 digit security number from the back of the card.
Please do not give the caller any information - our advice is to terminate the call immediately.
HM Revenue and Customs advise that if you are due a tax rebate then contact will be made via the post, they do not make any contact via the telephone to advise of tax rebates.
Also note this is very similar to the BT call advising that your account is over due and if immediate payment is not made the phone will be disconnected.
Never pass your details to anyone over the phone. Reputable companies will never ring you. They will always write to you.
Steve Brett PC1313.

Reports from Ferndown and West Moors that a burglar alarm company are again canvassing for business. Please warn your more vulnerable members not to deal with cold calling canvassers of this nature for their own consumer protection. Their MO is to sell the alarms quite cheaply but charge a very expensive maintenance fee..
